I've only done a couple stucco exteriors - and each was different. The last one was re-stucco'd in the 80's and required sealing. The other was a repaint - it was already "done" properly, but they hated the color. They called me just to pick out a new color and I didn't really hear about the prior prep.

Stucco requires a painter that knows what he is doing, I do know that. I'm glad to hear that you don't want to go cheap. Here's a link to a pro-painter's forum. I trust these guys a lot and it might be a good place to ask about your exterior.
